Instagram re-encodes whatever you give it, and it crops anything that is not one of the shapes it expects. Uploading a wide photo to a square slot means the app decides which part to keep, and it usually decides badly.

Sizing the picture yourself first settles that. You choose what stays in frame, and the upload arrives at exactly the dimensions Instagram wants, so it has less reason to re-compress it.

How to resize a photo for Instagram

The sizes, and what each is for

Square at 1080 × 1080 is the safe default: it is what a feed post has always been, and it looks right everywhere including the profile grid.

Portrait at 1080 × 1350 is the 4:5 shape. It occupies more of a phone screen than a square does, which is why so many accounts prefer it for anything meant to stop a scroll.

Story and Reel at 1080 × 1920 is full screen, 9:16. Keep anything important away from the top and bottom fifth, where the interface sits over your picture.

Cropped to fit, not stretched

A landscape photo and a 9:16 Story are different shapes, so something has to give. Stretching the picture to fit is the wrong answer — it makes faces wide and buildings lean.

This crops from the centre instead, keeping the shape correct and trimming the overflow evenly from both sides. That is the same thing Instagram would do, except you can see the result before you upload it.

If you would rather keep the whole frame and accept bars around it, switch the fit to Fit inside. If the photo is already the right shape, all of this is moot and nothing is cropped at all.

Why not just let Instagram do it

Instagram will accept almost anything and make it fit, but it crops to the centre with no regard for where your subject is, and it re-compresses hard on the way in.

Arriving at the exact dimensions gives it less to do. The picture is already the right shape and the right size, so the only thing left is its own compression pass, which starts from a cleaner file.

It also means you see what will be published before you publish it, rather than discovering in the preview that somebody's head is missing.

What size should an Instagram post be?

What size is an Instagram Story?
1080 × 1920, which is 9:16. Keep anything important out of the top and bottom fifth, where the interface overlaps your picture.
Will my photo be stretched?
No. It is cropped from the centre to the right shape, so nothing is distorted. You can switch to Fit inside if you would rather keep the whole frame.
Is my photo uploaded anywhere?
No. The resize runs in your browser, on your own device, so the file never reaches a server.
Does Instagram still compress it?
Yes — Instagram always re-encodes. Arriving at the exact dimensions simply gives it less to change, which usually means a cleaner result.
Can I use a HEIC photo from my iPhone?
Yes. HEIC is read directly and the result is saved in a format Instagram accepts.
Why is my square photo losing the edges?
Because the original is not square. Cropping takes the overflow evenly from both sides — crop it yourself first if you want to choose exactly what stays.
