Resize Pictures for Instagram

Portrait 4:5 (1080 × 1350) is the tallest shape the feed shows in full, so it takes up the most screen space as people scroll — the usual choice for photos of people. Square 1080 × 1080 suits products, graphics and carousels where every slide should match. Landscape photos can go up to 1.91:1, but they appear small on a phone.

Stories and Reels are full-screen 9:16 at 1080 × 1920; for a vertical frame with Story-specific advice, use the Instagram Story resizer. The profile picture is shown as a small circle, so a 320 × 320 square with the face centered is plenty.

Crop to fill keeps the middle of the photo. A landscape shot turned into a 4:5 portrait loses a lot of each side, so check people at the edges of a group photo. When the important part is off-center, place the frame yourself with Crop Image at 4:5 or 1:1, then resize here.

To post a wide photo without cropping at all, choose Fit inside: the whole photo is kept and the 1080 × 1350 frame is filled with white (JPG) or transparent (PNG) bands, which Instagram shows as white.

Instagram recompresses every upload. You get the cleanest result by uploading exactly 1080 pixels wide from a sharp original, so the app doesn't have to scale it again. Avoid screenshots of photos and repeatedly saved JPGs — each round adds artifacts that compression makes worse.

Photos that look sharp on your phone and soft on Instagram are usually being uploaded at reduced quality. The app has a setting to upload at the highest quality, found under media quality in Settings; turn it on if you post over Wi-Fi. Data-saving modes and weak connections also make the app send smaller files.

Carousels have a rule that catches many people: every slide is shown at the shape of the first one. If the first photo is square and the second portrait, the portrait slide is cropped. Resize the whole set to the same size in one batch before posting.

The profile grid shows a cropped preview of each post, centered, so a portrait post loses a little at the top and bottom in the grid even though it is shown in full in the feed. Keep the subject near the middle if the grid matters to you. Instagram expects standard sRGB color; photos exported in wide-gamut profiles can look duller after upload, and resaving them here as JPG or PNG converts them to a standard, widely supported file.
