Facebook's cover photo is the one that catches people out. It is an unusually wide, shallow strip, and a normal photograph dropped into it is cropped to a band across the middle — often the least interesting part of the picture.

Sizing it first decides that for yourself. The profile picture has the opposite problem: it is square and displayed as a circle, so anything near a corner is cut away twice over.

How to resize a photo for Facebook

The cover photo is the awkward one

At 851 × 315 the cover is roughly 2.7 times as wide as it is tall. Almost no photograph is that shape, so a large amount of any normal picture is discarded.

It is also displayed differently on a phone, where the visible area is narrower and taller than on a desktop. Anything that must survive both — a face, a logo, a line of text — belongs near the middle rather than at an edge.

Because of that, a cover photo is usually worth cropping deliberately first and only then resizing, so you choose the band that is kept.

The profile picture is a circle

Facebook stores the profile picture square but displays it as a circle, so the corners of your square are never seen. A face centred in the frame survives; a face pushed into a corner does not.

360 × 360 is comfortably above the size it is displayed at, which leaves room for the sharper rendering that high-density screens ask for.

If the subject sits off to one side, crop the photo first — or use the circle crop, which shows you exactly what the circle will keep.

Cropped to fit, not stretched

A tall portrait and a 851 × 315 cover are nothing like the same shape. Stretching one into the other distorts every face in it, so this crops from the centre instead and trims the overflow evenly.

Switch the fit to Fit inside if you would rather keep the whole frame and accept bars around it — on a JPG those bars are white, on a PNG they stay transparent.

When the photo already matches the target shape, nothing is cropped and the fit choice makes no difference at all.
