What converting to WEBP gives you

Smaller images load sooner, and on most pages the largest image decides how fast the page feels. Serving WEBP instead of JPG and PNG is one of the most direct ways to improve load time and the Largest Contentful Paint score Google measures.

Transparency is kept: a PNG logo or an AVIF cut-out converted to WEBP stays see-through. Dimensions do not change, and the image is written at a high quality setting, so photos look the same at normal size.

Converting from each format

From PNG the saving is usually largest — often 70% or more for photos and illustrations. From JPG, expect roughly a quarter to a third off. From HEIC, WEBP makes an iPhone photo web-ready in one step.

From AVIF the WEBP will usually be larger, because AVIF compresses harder still. Convert AVIF to WEBP when you need broader compatibility, not a smaller file.
