Right-click an image on almost any modern website and you get a .webp file. It is the right format for the site to serve, but the wrong one to hand to an upload form, a print service or an older desktop application — plenty of them still refuse it outright.

Converting to JPG gives you the most widely accepted image format there is, at a fraction of a PNG's size. The conversion runs in your browser with the Canvas API: nothing is uploaded, there is no size cap and no account, and the JPG you download is clean.

How to convert WEBP to JPG

WEBP or JPG — which one do you actually need?

WEBP is a delivery format. It exists so a web page can send fewer bytes, and at that it is very good: roughly 25–35% smaller than a JPG of the same quality, with transparency and lossless modes JPG has never had.

JPG is an interchange format. It has been read by everything since the early 1990s, which is why upload forms, print labs, photo books, e-commerce back-ends and older editors all assume it. That universality is the entire reason to convert.

So keep WEBP for images you serve on a page, and convert to JPG for images you send somewhere, upload, print or open in software you do not control.

What the conversion does

Both formats are lossy, so this is a second encode. It is done at a high quality setting and the dimensions do not change, which means the JPG is visually indistinguishable from the WEBP at normal viewing size.

Transparency cannot survive. JPG has no alpha channel, so any transparent area in the WEBP is filled with white. If the image has a cut-out subject or a see-through background you want to keep, convert to PNG instead.

Expect the JPG to be somewhat larger than the WEBP — often 30–50% more for the same picture. That is WEBP's efficiency showing, not a fault in the conversion. Compress the JPG afterwards if the size matters.

When you need a JPG instead of a WEBP

  • An upload form rejects the file
