Compress Image for Shopify — Free Online

A square product photograph and a tall garment photograph should not be forced into the same shape by stretching. The initial long-edge resize keeps their proportions. If you need consistent outer canvases across a collection, prepare the framing first with Resize Image to 1024×1024 or custom dimensions. Compare the full product outline and leave suitable space around it.

Shopify can deliver different image versions through its own image service, as explained in product-media guidance. A precompressed copy should therefore be tested in the theme rather than assumed to be the final bytes every shopper receives. Keep a detailed original for zoom views, later edits and placements that need a different export.

WebP can preserve transparency, but a small palette or heavy lossy compression can still change visual details. Inspect product color, logos and soft edges before replacing an asset. This page does not log into Shopify, edit theme code, install an app or synchronize a catalog. Download the copy, upload it to the correct product and check both the gallery and collection presentation on a phone.

Open one JPG, JPEG, PNG or WebP and review the preset before starting. A target is a maximum file budget, not an exact output weight. These pages use decimal units: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. You can change the target, select the output format and switch optional resizing on or off. Where a maximum long edge is preset, both dimensions scale together and smaller sources are not enlarged. Use Resize Image first when an exact canvas or crop is required.

The compressor tries encoding settings and measures their output. JPEG and WebP can discard detail; PNG compression may reduce the color palette. A demanding byte budget can also trigger proportional downscaling, even after you choose starting dimensions. The result shows the final dimensions and whether the maximum was met. An unsuccessful attempt remains clearly marked; choosing a bigger budget or changing dimensions may be necessary. JPEG puts transparency on white. Compare fine text, edges and important details before downloading. A smaller number is useful only if the image remains suitable for its destination. Return to the original when trying another setting, rather than repeatedly compressing the last copy. An already-fitting source is returned unchanged, including metadata, only when its format and dimensions also need no change.
