Why use this tool

  • No file size limit

Full-size photos straight from your phone or camera.

  • Nothing is uploaded

Processed entirely in your browser. Your files never leave your device.

  • No signup needed

Open the tool and go. No account, no email.

Save an image from almost any modern website and you get a .webp file. Browsers show it happily, but plenty of desktop software, older phones, document templates and upload forms still refuse it. Converting to PNG gives you a file that opens everywhere and keeps transparency intact.

The conversion runs in your browser using the Canvas API. Nothing is uploaded, there is no size cap and no account, and the PNG you download is clean.

How to convert WEBP to PNG

  1. Add your WEBP file

Drag the .webp file into the box, or click to browse. Files are identified by their contents, so a renamed file still works.

  2. Check that PNG is selected

PNG is already chosen — it is lossless and keeps transparency. JPG is there if you want a smaller file and do not need transparency.

  3. Convert and download

Press Convert to PNG and download the result.

Why websites serve WEBP

WEBP is Google's image format, supported by every current browser. It is typically 25–35% smaller than an equivalent JPG or PNG at the same quality, and it does both lossy and lossless compression while keeping an alpha channel. For a site trying to load quickly that is a straightforward win, which is why right-clicking an image now so often produces a .webp file.

Support outside the browser lags well behind. Older versions of Photoshop, many print workflows, some CMS uploaders, Office templates and a long tail of phone apps have never added it. PNG has no such problem: it has been read by everything for thirty years.

What the conversion does

PNG is lossless, so the conversion stores exactly what the WEBP decoded to — nothing further is discarded. If the WEBP was lossy to begin with, the PNG preserves that image faithfully; it cannot restore detail that was thrown away before the file reached you.

Transparency is kept. A WEBP with an alpha channel becomes a PNG with the same transparency, ready to place over any background.

Expect the PNG to be noticeably larger than the WEBP, often two to four times. That is the cost of lossless storage rather than a problem with the conversion. If you want a small file that opens everywhere and do not need transparency, convert to JPG instead.

WEBP compared with PNG

One is made for delivering images over a network, the other for storing them safely.

When you need a PNG instead of a WEBP

  • An app won't open the file

Older editors, viewers and phone apps commonly stop dead at a .webp file.

  • Placing an image in a document

Word, PowerPoint and many templates handle PNG reliably and WEBP unpredictably.

  • An upload form rejects it

Marketplaces, job boards and portals tend to list JPG and PNG and nothing else.

  • Print and design work

Print workflows expect a lossless format, not one designed for shipping pixels over a network.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert WEBP to PNG for free?
Drop the .webp file into the box above, leave PNG selected and press Convert to PNG. No account, no watermark and no limit.
Does converting WEBP to PNG improve the quality?
No. PNG stores the decoded image losslessly, which means nothing more is lost — but nothing is recovered either. If the WEBP was lossy, the PNG preserves exactly that image.
Is transparency kept when converting WEBP to PNG?
Yes. The alpha channel is carried through, so a transparent WEBP becomes a transparent PNG.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the WEBP?
PNG is lossless and stores every pixel, while WEBP compresses aggressively. Two to four times the size is normal. Convert to JPG instead if size matters more than transparency.
Can I convert WEBP to JPG instead?
Yes — select JPG before converting. Any transparent areas will be filled with white, because JPG cannot store transparency.
How do I open a WEBP file on Windows or Mac?
Any browser will display it, Windows Photos supports it, and Preview on macOS Ventura and later opens it. To use the image in software that will not read it, convert it to PNG here.
Is my WEBP file uploaded when converting to PNG?
No. The file is decoded and re-encoded inside your browser tab and never leaves your device.
Can I convert a PNG back to WEBP?
Yes. Use the image converter and pick WEBP as the output — useful when you want a smaller file for a web page.
