PNG is lossless: it stores every pixel exactly, which keeps logos and screenshots sharp but makes photographs and large graphics very heavy. A PNG saved from a design tool or a screenshot of a full screen easily runs to several megabytes.

Browsers cannot make a PNG meaningfully smaller while keeping it a PNG — their PNG encoder is lossless and ignores any quality setting. So this PNG compressor saves your image as WEBP instead: the same pixels, the same transparency, a fraction of the size. Why a compressed PNG comes back as WEBP

PNG compression is lossless: the only way to shrink a PNG while keeping the format is to reduce its colours to a palette, which is a job for dedicated desktop software. Re-saving a PNG as PNG in a browser leaves it the same size or larger.

WEBP was built to replace PNG and JPG on the web. It keeps the alpha channel, so transparent backgrounds stay transparent, and it honours the quality setting, so the saving is real — commonly 70–90% for photographs and large graphics saved as PNG, less for small flat icons.

Every current browser displays WEBP, as do WordPress, Shopify and most site builders. The exceptions are some older desktop software and upload forms that insist on PNG or JPG.

If you need to keep a .png file

When a PNG is required, the most effective way to make it smaller is to reduce its dimensions: halving the width and height leaves a quarter of the pixels, and the PNG shrinks with them. Resize the image and download it as PNG.

If the image has no transparency and is a photograph, converting it from PNG to JPG is the other option — typically a fifth to a third of the size, with transparent areas filled with white.

Why is the result a WEBP and not a PNG?
