AVIF is the newest image format on the web. Sites and image CDNs serve it because it is remarkably small, so when you save a picture from a web page today, there is a good chance it lands on your disk as an .avif file. The trouble starts afterwards: many photo viewers, editors, office apps and upload forms still don't open it.

This AVIF to JPG converter uses the AVIF decoder already built into your browser and writes a standard JPG. Nothing is uploaded, there is no account and no watermark. Your browser is checked for AVIF support before the file is opened, so if it is too old you get a clear message rather than a failed conversion.

What AVIF is and why it won't open

AVIF — AV1 Image File Format — stores a picture compressed with AV1, a video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media, whose members include Google, Apple, Microsoft, Mozilla and Netflix. At the same visual quality an AVIF is typically smaller than both JPG and WEBP, and it supports transparency, HDR and wide colour.

Browsers adopted it quickly: Chrome in 2020, Firefox in 2021, Safari in 2022, Edge at the start of 2024. Outside the browser, support is patchier — older versions of Windows Photos, Photoshop, Word and PowerPoint, and many upload forms either reject .avif files or show nothing. JPG, supported everywhere since the 1990s, avoids all of that.

What happens during the conversion

Your browser decodes the AVIF and the image is written as a JPG at a high quality setting, at the same dimensions. JPG has no transparency, so any transparent areas are filled with white; choose PNG or WEBP instead to keep them.

JPG stores standard-range colour, so an HDR or wide-gamut AVIF is brought into that range, as it would be on most screens. An animated AVIF becomes a still JPG of its first frame.

If your browser can't read AVIF

The conversion depends on your browser's own AVIF decoder, and this page checks for it before touching your file. If the decoder is missing — typically an out-of-date browser, or Edge before version 121 — you will see a message saying so. Updating the browser, or opening the page in a current Chrome, Firefox, Edge or Safari, fixes it. Your file is never sent to a server as a workaround.
