Image Size & Resolution Checker

Check an image’s width, height, file size, resolution and aspect ratio online. Drop in a photo and its dimensions appear at once.

Your file

Why use this tool

  • No file size limit
  • Nothing is uploaded
  • No signup needed

The checker reads the numbers from the image file itself, on your device, so even a large photo answers instantly and nothing is uploaded. It works with JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, AVIF, BMP, TIFF and iPhone HEIC photos.

How to check the size of an image

  1. Add your image

Drag it onto the checker, click to choose it, or paste a screenshot with Ctrl+V.

  2. Read the details

You see the width and height in pixels, the aspect ratio, the file size, the resolution stored in the file and the format.

  3. Check another

Choose Check another image to look at the next one. Your image stays on your device.

Image dimensions: width and height in pixels

An image’s dimensions are the number of pixels across and down, written as width × height, for example 1920 × 1080. They decide how much detail the image holds and how large it can be shown before it looks blocky. Phone photos are often saved sideways with a note telling apps to turn them upright; the checker reports the size the way the image is shown. To change the dimensions, resize the image, for example to 1920 × 1080, or crop it to a new shape.

Aspect ratio: the shape of an image

The aspect ratio is width compared with height, reduced to the simplest numbers. 1920 × 1080 is 16:9, 4032 × 3024 is 4:3 and 1080 × 1080 is 1:1. When the numbers don’t reduce neatly, as with many phone screenshots, the checker gives the closest common ratio. Two images with the same ratio can be resized into each other without stretching or cropping. To start from an empty canvas of an exact size and ratio instead, make a blank image in those dimensions.

File size and resolution (DPI)

File size, in KB or MB, is how much storage the image takes. It depends on the format and compression as much as on the dimensions, so two images of the same size in pixels can weigh very different amounts. To get under an upload limit, reduce the file size. The resolution shown in DPI is a number stored in the file for printing; many images have none, and it doesn’t change the pixels. To see how large an image prints, use the DPI checker.

Check image size on iPhone, Android, Windows or Mac

Your device can show the same numbers. On an iPhone, open the photo in Photos and swipe up or tap the info button to see its dimensions and file size. In Google Photos on Android, swipe up on the photo. On Windows, right-click the file, choose Properties and open the Details tab. On a Mac, open the image in Preview and choose Tools, then Show Inspector. The checker above gives the same answer on any device, plus the aspect ratio, without hunting through menus.

Common image sizes and their aspect ratios

Sizes you will often see when you check an image. Matching the aspect ratio first means an image can then be resized to the exact size without stretching.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check an image’s size on an iPhone?
In the Photos app, open the picture and swipe up or tap the info button: recent iOS versions list its pixel dimensions and file size there. For the aspect ratio and stored DPI as well, open this page in Safari and pick the photo from your library.
How do I find the width and height of an image?
Drop the image into the checker: the width and height are the first two values, in pixels. They are the size as the image is shown, including photos a phone saved sideways.
How do I check image resolution online?
Resolution can mean two things. Usually it means the pixel dimensions, such as 1920 × 1080, which the checker shows first. For printing, it can also mean the DPI stored in the file, shown under Resolution. More pixels give more room for detail, but no checker can see blur or noise, so look at the image itself too.
How is the aspect ratio calculated?
Width and height are divided by their largest common factor. 1920 × 1080 becomes 16:9 because both numbers divide by 120. If the result is awkward, such as 131:284, the checker shows the nearest common ratio instead.
Are pixel dimensions and file size the same thing?
Image size usually means the dimensions in pixels, such as 1920 × 1080. File size is how much storage the file uses, such as 450 KB. Format and compression change the file size without changing the dimensions.
How many megapixels is my image?
Multiply the width by the height and divide by one million. A 4032 × 3024 photo has 12,192,768 pixels, about 12.2 megapixels; a 1920 × 1080 image is about 2.1 megapixels.
Why does Resolution say “Not stored in the file”?
Because the file doesn’t store one. That is common for screenshots and images saved for the web, and it doesn’t affect the image. What matters for printing is the number of pixels; the DPI checker shows how large they print.
Is my image uploaded?
No. The numbers are read from the file by this tab, on your own device, so the picture never leaves it.
