Read the destination’s current instructions before modifying an identity photo. Paper applications and online renewals may follow different workflows. For example, the U.S. passport photo guidance distinguishes application routes. Use the issuing authority’s directions for framing, recent appearance and permitted edits; a generic resizer cannot decide whether changing the source is appropriate for your application.

Inspect the entire head, chin and surrounding space after any crop. The centered fit does not detect a face or position the eyes automatically. If cropping is allowed and the subject needs repositioning, use Crop Image carefully first. Do not stretch a face to force it into a rectangular frame. Padding is a layout option, not a way to certify that a photograph satisfies background rules.

The fields are pixels, not millimeters, and this tool does not set a certified print size or DPI tag. When a portal also has a file-size rule, Compress Image for Government Upload can prepare a separate copy, but compression may alter detail or dimensions. Recheck both afterward. Keep the original capture, read every requirement and use the application’s own validation; acceptance remains the authority’s decision.

Open one image and check the width and height before processing. Selecting a preset fills both fields; you can replace those values with custom pixel dimensions. The default fit fills the canvas with a centered crop. When the shapes differ, the fit controls let you keep the whole picture with padding instead, or deliberately stretch it. Padding is white for JPEG and can be transparent for PNG or WebP. The aspect lock controls dimension edits; it does not protect an off-center subject from a crop.

The resizer accepts JPG, JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC and AVIF. HEIC needs its browser decoder, downloaded when first required; AVIF support depends on the browser. JPEG, PNG and WebP retain their format, while HEIC is exported as JPEG and AVIF as PNG. If the destination needs another format, use Image to JPG or the corresponding converter. A correct filename extension alone does not mean that a file has been converted. This page resizes a still image, not a video or an animated sequence.

Review the downloaded copy at its intended display size as well as at full resolution. Enlarging a small source creates more pixels but cannot restore missing detail. Resizing sets pixel dimensions, not a guaranteed maximum in KB; Reduce Image Size handles a file budget afterward. Keep the original for another attempt, since repeatedly saving a JPEG can accumulate visible damage. The tool processes files locally without signup and does not publish to another service.
