Custom emoji have strict limits. A GIF that is too big, too long or the wrong shape is rejected, and fixing it by hand means guessing at sizes, colors and frame counts until the upload finally goes through.

This GIF to emoji converter knows the limits. It crops the GIF to a square, scales it to the size each platform uses, and searches for the best-looking version that fits under the file size limit, dropping frames only when nothing else works. The result shows which platforms will accept it, and how it looks at the tiny size it appears in a message.

How to turn a GIF into an emoji

  1. Add your GIF

Drop a GIF on the box above, or choose one. A still PNG, JPG or WEBP works too, for a static emoji.

  2. Pick the platform

Choose Discord, Slack or Twitch, or set your own size and file limit. Each platform's limits are shown as you choose.

  3. Choose how to make it square

Crop the middle to fill the emoji, or fit the whole picture in with transparent space around it. The dashed square shows what will be kept.

  4. Make it and upload

Press Make emoji. The finished emoji plays at full size and at chat size, with a check for each platform. Download it and upload it as a custom emoji.

Discord emoji from a GIF

Discord accepts custom emoji up to 256 KB and shows them at 48 pixels in messages, so a 128 × 128 GIF is plenty: it stays sharp when enlarged and is easy to keep under the limit. Choose Discord and the emoji is made to exactly that.

To upload it, open your server settings, then Emoji, and choose Upload Emoji; you need permission to manage expressions on that server. Anyone can upload animated emoji to a server, but sending them in messages requires Discord Nitro.

Slack emoji from a GIF

Slack is stricter: custom emoji must be under 128 KB, and an animated emoji can have no more than 50 frames. Choose Slack and longer GIFs are thinned to 50 frames, with the remaining frames holding longer so the animation keeps its speed.

Add it from Slack's emoji menu with Add Emoji, or from your workspace's Customize page. Some workspaces let only admins add emoji.

Twitch animated emotes from a GIF

Twitch animated emotes, available to Affiliates and Partners, can be uploaded with automatic resizing as a square GIF of 112 pixels or more, under 1 MB and with at most 60 frames. Choose Twitch and the GIF is made 112 × 112 within those limits.

Twitch also reviews emotes before they go live, and very fast flashing animation can be rejected, so check the result at chat size before you upload.

Making a GIF work at emoji size

An emoji is tiny in a message: about the height of a line of text. Faces, single objects and big simple motion read well; wide scenes, small text and subtle movement disappear. Crop to the part that matters before anything else. A slow reaction also reads better at emoji size once the GIF speed changer has sped it up.

If the emoji has a solid background you want gone, remove the GIF background first, then make the emoji from the transparent GIF. To fine-tune size and colors yourself, the GIF compressor can fit any GIF to an exact file size.

Custom emoji limits by platform

Frequently asked questions

How do I make a GIF into a Discord emoji?
Add the GIF, choose Discord, and press Make emoji. Upload the result in your server settings under Emoji. Using animated emoji in messages requires Discord Nitro.
Why does Discord or Slack say my GIF is too large?
Their emoji limits are small: 256 KB for Discord and 128 KB for Slack. This tool scales the GIF to emoji size and reduces colors and, if needed, frames until it fits.
How do I add a GIF as a Slack emoji?
Make it here with Slack selected, then in Slack open the emoji menu and choose Add Emoji. The tool keeps it under 128 KB and 50 frames.
What size should a custom emoji be?
Square, and 128 × 128 pixels for Discord and Slack. Twitch animated emotes with automatic resizing need a square of at least 112 pixels.
Will my emoji keep its animation speed?
Yes. When frames have to be dropped, the remaining ones hold longer, so the animation lasts as long as the original.
Can I make a still emoji from a picture?
Yes. Add a PNG, JPG or WEBP and you get a square still emoji in GIF format at the size the platform uses.
Does it keep transparency?
Yes. Transparent areas stay transparent. With "Fitting it all in", the space around the picture is transparent too.
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. The emoji is made in your browser. Only you upload it, to the platform you choose.
